25th April 2008 Update - Otelinox to Treble Precision Strip Capacity for 2010
A spokesman for Otelinox, the Romanian stainless steel mill, said that a ground-breaking ceremony of precision plant expansion took place on 18th April in Otelinox. During it, plans were announced to expand Otelinox’s precision plant capability by 30,000 tonnes a year. In combination with its regular wide strip production line, this will take total capacity for Otelinox cold rolled stainless steel strip and coil production to 90,000 tonnes.
Samsung Deutschland GmbH, a subsidiary of Samsung C&T Corporation, Seoul, acquired the majority of Otelinox shares in 1997, and increased its holding to 94% in 2006.
Since its takeover by Samsung Deutschland, targeted restructuring and conversion measures have prompted considerable increases in productivity and quality at Otelinox.
A large investment programme and higher training levels have led the plant on to new strengths. In 2002 the state of the art precision strip line was built, existing production lines have been modernised and optimised, and an advanced management and production system has been introduced alongside ‘Six Sigma’ quality training.
Like many other companies, historical changes in the EU gave Otelinox huge opportunities. This has led Otelinox from an underperforming state-owned stainless steel mill, into one of the major players in the European stainless steel wide and precision strip market.
At present, Otelinox produces 15,000 mt of 0.05 – 0.8 mm thick, 5-625 mm wide stainless steel cold rolled precision strip. The new standard width rolling mill will have an increased product range of 0.1-1.5 mm thick with width up to a maximum of 1250 mm. The main product will be wide width precision strip, but the line will also have capacity for 2B / BA surface finish product. All this will enable Otelinox to continue to become a more diverse and flexible producer, better able to match the individual requirements of its customers. The new line will be commissioned in December 2009, with commercial production beginning in 2010.
Otelinox mainly supplies ultra-fine precision strip for use in the automotive, aerospace and electronic industries. Otelinox produces the material according to customer specific technical requirements, enabling customers to produce enhanced high-end applications. It has a primarily European sales base, with representative offices in: Frankfurt, London, Paris, Milan, Istanbul, Madrid, Moscow, Warsaw, Sofia, Prague, Budapest and Kiev. But its stainless steel products are also sold around the world into North America and Asia.
Mr. Soo Hee Han vice president of Otelinox stated ‘This new capacity in the precision line will enhance our reputation as the premier force in precision stainless steel strip and coil into the future. And with the highest standard of quality, service and leading technology Otelinox will continue to pursue customer value as its priority and will continue to grow together with its customers.’
